Protein has been classified as a body-building food. This makes it the essential food group to patronize when looking to bulk up on muscle, or grow tissues, bones and also produce blood. Protein is very fundamental in the sustenance of life, growth, and health.

Protein does not contribute to the fat reserves in our body.  Instead contributes to the growth of our lean body mass which helps break down body fat in our body. So, the million-dollar question: Does a low protein diet help you lose weight? No, it does not.

A study was carried out by scientists recently which on a group of people who were categorized to eat either low-protein meals high-fat or high-protein low-fat meals for 8 weeks. The result of this study shows that participants on high-protein meals gained more overall weight than those on low-protein meals.

However, on closer inspection.  It was discovered that the weight gained by those on a high-protein diet was actually growth in lean body mass.  Not in addition to total body fat. The reason those on a low-protein high-fat diet weighed less than the other group was due to the fact that they were shedding lean body mass.

Due to a lack of adequate protein in their diet. Also, those on a high-protein diet and a low-protein diet gained the same amount of fat in the number of weeks they were there.

This goes to imply that protein does not lead to an increase in the amount of fat in your body.  But an increase in lean body mass. So, protein can lead to an increase in weight as lean body mass, but also helps you shed fat which causes obesity.
